If you are a fan of adventure, then you are familiar with the incredible exploits of Sasha Siemel hunting jaguars. If you are not, then we strongly recommend you look him up online or buy a secondhand copy of his book Tigero to read about his amazing adventures.

This reproduction is a more refined version of the most ornate spear he hunted Jaguars in Brazil’s Matto Grasso wilderness. No expense was spared to bring this iconic piece to life. Due to the intricate nature of the spearhead, we hired a Forged in Fire Champion to reproduce it for us, complete with the sharpened reverse angle guards to make sure the Jaguar would not come too far down the shaft. The hand forged spear head is a massive piece that weighs 4 pounds and measures 23” overall as there is some overlap between the socket and the spear head. It has a 12” long blade that is up to 2 5/8” wide and guards that measure just over 4 ½” wide with an extra-long 12” socket for added strength. The surface of the metal shows the hundreds of hammer strikes that brought this idea to fruition. The dimensions we used for the razor-sharp spearhead are as close to the original as possible without having the original one pictured in his book in our hands.

We did take some liberties with the shaft design as we thought a straight contoured shaft like the one on the original would not do this stunning piece justice. The beautiful Brazilian Jatoba exotic wood shaft was hand turned with an interesting contour that mimics the curves of the female form during its 72” length. The end is rounded for a refined look. Each shaft was sanded by hand using 5 different grits for a glasslike surface and hand finished with satin gloss polyurethane to bring out the beauty of this reddish-orange wood that sometimes features brown or black highlights. This species of wood is photoreactive which means it will darken with exposure to sunlight. Brazilian Jatobá trees grow to 4’ across and 130 feet tall giving them a Janka hardness of almost twice that of red oak to support all that weight. The grain of this wood is commonly interlocked, which increases its rigidity and made it a favorite of Amazonian headhunters for their blowguns, short swords and arrows tips. The blood red Jatoba blowgun shown with the spear in one of the photos is a century old and has a metal tip crafted from half of a pair of heavy-duty shears to impale monkeys shot out of trees that were very much alive when they hit the ground.

The wood taper on the end that fits into the spear is an exact copy of the internal dimensions of the socket. The first time we put the spear on the shaft, the friction fit was so tight we had a very difficult time getting it off! To ensure the head never comes off we secured it to the shaft with a stainless-steel pin that is flared on both ends. This beautiful piece is just under 7’ long at 82.5” overall and weighs approximately 6 1/2 pounds. The scale of this hand-crafted piece is something you must have in your hands to appreciate.

This first batch is limited to just 15 examples. From start to finish this project took over a year to complete. It is unlikely we will make a second batch as we are already working on our next historical spear reproduction.
